One of the most enjoyable aspects of the “Suicide Squad” film is the nods, winks, and Easter eggs to the fans who know and love the comic characters. Specifically, the detailed tattoo art that went into Jared Leto and Margot Robbie’s tattoo art for the film has character plots and references to story arcs popular and not popular, cannon and non cannon, original and new Joker and Harley details. Below are some of the explanations to some of most notable tattoos on the Mad Love couple.
Joker’s laughing mouth on hand/”damaged”/and grill: the tattoo that goes over the back of Joker’s hand is in reference to when he had his teeth knocked out from a severe beating (most believed to be Batman). When the grill was inserted into his mouth over his remaining teeth, he had the laughing mouth tattoo made on the back of his hand. He covers his hand over his mouth, the tattoo acting as the smile with teeth as he laughs. The “damaged” tattoo on his forehead is in result to losing his teeth and his iconic smile as well as the fact that he is insane.
Bat and robin: Joker’s knife through the bat is fairly straightforward, the war between Batman and himself, as well as a possible reference to the emotional blow he caused Batman on the murder of Batman’s partner, Robin. The arrow through the robin is the Joker’s murder of Robin permanently on display on his skin, a reminder to all who see it that he is responsible for Robin’s death.
Clown Prince: Joker is the Clown Prince of Crime, he has a very large skull with a jester hat atop of it.
Ace flush of cards: Joker’s well known weapons of dagger/knife-like cards as well the “joker” card he sometimes leaves as a calling card in his crimes. 
Harley’s red and black diamond wrist: Harley’s diamond wrist is in reference to her origin when she was created on “Batman the Animated Series”. Her villainous harlequin jester design was black, red, with white lace and white clown makeup. As well as this jester outfit making a cameo in Harley Quinn flashback snippets and Harley’s prison collected clothing and weapons in the Suicide Squad film, the tattoo is a reminder of where her character began.
Puddin’: like her harlequin jester outfit, Harley’s origin on Batman the Animated Series includes her most used pet name for the Joker, “Puddin'”. She calls her “Mr. J” or sometimes “Mista’ J” Puddin’ constantly. And “Puddin'” is tattooed on her body in several locations.
Poke and stick tattoos: the poke and stick tattoos of the tally marks, joker skull in a jester hat, hearts and diamonds, and “I’ll Wait forever” show her obsessive love for Joker that she has had since her creation—as well as his ownership of her.
“Daddy’s lil’ Monster”/”Property of Joker”/Joker skull/large “J”: As well as “Daddy” being a name the Joker has used when referring to himself with Harley in Batman the Animated Series, the “Daddy’s lil’ Monster”, tattoos and clothing, “Property of Joker” tattoos and clothing, the large “J”, and the Joker skull in the jester hat show the Joker’s possessive nature and ownership that he has of Harley. These are bold statements and reminders to all that Harley is Joker’s, and Joker alone. Even in their most abusive moments with one another, Joker has never allowed anyone—especially another man to harm her emotionally or physically without his consent without grave consequences. Something that that the film showed well, when Common’s character Tattoo Man called Harley a ‘bitch’ and showed sexual interest in her. Nor has the Joker allowed another man to touch Harley out of attraction for her without the same repercussions. Harley’s Joker skulls both professionally done as well as the poke and stick tattoos show how much power and ownership the Joker has over her as well as how dedicated she is to him, how obsessed she is with him, and how much she loves him.
“I’m Watching”: The eyes underneath the “I’m Watching” show the intelligence that Harley has aside from her ditzy, dizzy, and playful nature. She is a brilliant manipulative person and used her skills in life before and after becoming Harley Quinn. She sees all, is not one to be crossed or trifled with. The eyes however can be taken as her eyes or Joker’s eyes, giving more into his possessive nature.
